PCs, handhelds, mobile, console, indies, triple A, free-to-play — the gaming scene gets more diverse and difficult to follow by the day, but thankfully, I’m here ever week to guide you through what’s happening with games.
As always, I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let’s get to it…
This Week’s Steampunk Strategy Game
Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. (3DS, March 13)
Okay, I hope all the folks who like to complain about Nintendo’s lack of new IP are paying attention. Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is a new comic book-styled strategy game, set in a steampunk world populated by famous fictional characters like Tom Sawyer and The Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz, as well as real-world historical figures like Abraham Lincoln. How’s that for an original IP? If you want new things from Nintendo, give this a shot.

Ori and the Blind Forest (PC & Xbox One, March 11)
Ori and the Blind Forest is your latest super-beautiful 2D indie platformer. You star as Ori, a forest guardian spirit who’s on a quest to save his adopted mother. Ori isn’t just a touching coming of age story, though. It also looks to be a pretty serious action-heavy platformer. Test your skills, then feel some feels. Here’s the game’s Steam page.
This Week’s Pile of Disturbing Sh*t
Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number (PC, PS3, PS4 & PS Vita, March 10)
The controversial Hotline Miami 2 answers the call this week. This sequel delivers more of the same brutal gameplay as the original, but this time, the story is more expansive, featuring a whopping 13 characters instead of just the two of the original game. The game will also have a level editor. Get ready to feel dirty again.
This Week’s Episodic Game
Warning: The following trailer may contain Episode 1 and 2 spoilers.
Resident Evil: Revelations 2 – Episode 3 (PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 & PS4, March 10)
Resident Evil: Revelations 2 marches on with another new episode this week. Last week’s Episode 2 was quite a bit better than Episode 1, so hopefully the upward trend in quality continues.
Pick of the Week
Sid Meier’s Starships (PC, March 12)
A more accurate title for this game would probably be Sid Meier’s Star Trek: The Next Generation, and if that combo doesn’t interest you, I’m afraid we can’t be friends. Sid Meier’s Starships lets you build and customize your starship fleet, which you’ll use to found and defend your mighty intergalactic federation. Starships also hooks into the recently released Civilization: Beyond Earth, so if that game’s already been consuming your life, get ready to take things to the next level.
Probably the best week of 2015 thus far. Any games you’re itching to get your hands on that I failed to mention? Hit the comments and let the world know.
