Warning: This post contains BIRTHDAY SPOILERS.
The Metal Gear Solid games can be dark, dense and mind-breakingly complex, but the thing that really sets the series apart and has made it such a fan favorite are all the quirky little extras and Easter eggs packed into every game. It’s clear that every Metal Game is made with a huge amount of care and affection.
Case in point, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the only M-rated action game I can think of that throws you a surprise birthday party. Metal Gear Solid V asks players for their birthdays at the beginning of the game, and now we know why. If you boot up the game on your b-day and return to Mother Base, Ocelot and your Diamond Dogs compatriots will surprise you with a slightly off-brand version of Happy Birthday. And a cake! And a cigar! If you don’t mind having the party spoiled, you can check it out at the top of this post.
Apparently, this isn’t the only birthday bonus in the game. Extra scenes can be unlocked if you have a 100 percent bonding rating with certain characters. Here’s the extra scene you get if you happen to be good pals with Quiet as of your birthday…
I’m sure there’s even more birthday goodies yet to find. Thanks for this last present, Kojima.
