After much pleading from fans, the cult-favorite Mirror’s Edge series is returning this year. Mirror’s Edge Catalyst delivers the same first-person parkour gameplay as the original game, but now everything takes place in an open world and there seems to be more of an emphasis on story.
The original Mirror’s Edge told its minimal story through simple, cartoon cutscenes, but Catalyst looks to have much more dramatic, elaborate cinematics. The above trailer lays out the broad story strokes – Faith has stolen something she shouldn’t have, and now she and all the other runners are being hunted by an evil businessman-type named Gabriel Kruger. Sounds like a fine reason to go jumping around on top of skyscrapers to me.
In other news, EA will be running a closed beta for Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. This is likely to test the game’s online component – Catalyst doesn’t feature a traditional multiplayer, but there are leaderboards and your actions can affect other people’s games in a variety of ways. No specific word on when the beta will kick off, but if you’d like to test out Catalyst a little early, you can register for the beta right here.
Mirror’s Edge Catalyst hits store shelves on May 24.
