It’s usually a bad idea to get too excited about a new Sonic the Hedgehog game, but the upcoming Sonic Mania looks surprisingly promising. Designed by Christian Whitehead, a Sonic mega fan who has produced well-liked remakes of several classic Sega Genesis Sonic games, Sonic Mania is the 16-bit adventure you’ve been waiting for since the late ’90s. You can check out some deliciously pixely Sonic Mania gameplay footage, above.
Looks pretty good, right? Well, brace yourselves, Genesis kids, because Sega is delving even deeper into the nostalgia mines with the limited edition boxed version of Sonic Mania. Check this business out.

The Sonic Mania collector’s edition comes in a black box that mimics the look of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, and includes a replica Genesis cartridge, a shiny “gold” ring, and a nifty statue of Sonic posing atop a Sega Genesis. The mini Genesis doesn’t play games, but flipping its on-switch will play the indelible “Seeeega” intro heard at the beginning of most Genesis titles. You know the one…
Okay, Sega. Chill out, you’ve got me. YOU’VE GOT ME.
So how much will all this nostalgia cost? Surprisingly, only a mere $70. Sonic Mania races onto the Xbox One and PS4 early next year.
