It’s a well-established rule that each new console has to launch with a pretty, technically competent, but not particularly innovative racing game. Xbox One had Forza 5 and the PS4 was supposed to have Driveclub, but the game missed its release date and Sony has totally clammed up about the title since.
Well, if you were hoping Sony and developer Evolution Studios were just making a few tweaks and the game would be coming soon, well, keep hoping. Here’s what Sony gaming exec Scott Rohde had to say about the state of Driveclub…
“We really don’t want to release a game before it’s ready. And sometimes, this happens in the normal course of business, where we think we’re on track to deliver what we think is going to be a great game, and when we get closer, we realize that we’d be doing everyone a disservice if we shipped it before it was ready.
We’re willing to kinda eat that cost, and go back to the drawing board and make sure the game is great before we ship it. And that’s what’s going on right now with that game.”
In other words, they’re doing much more than just tweaking — in fact, it sounds like they pretty much scrapped the game entirely. When asked when the game will be launching, Rohde wouldn’t even commit to a 2014 date. Yikes.
Hopefully this revamp results in a good game, but I have to wonder — is anyone actually interested in playing a blandly competent launch racer outside of a console’s launch window? Maybe it would be better to just get Evolution Studios going on another MotorStorm game instead.
