Oh, Counter-Strike. It’s hard to believe that the granddaddy of all online shooters is more than 15 years old. I remember first trying Counter-Strike and immediately discovering that I’m absolutely terrible at competitive shooters like it was yesterday. Even harder to believe is the fact that Counter-Strike is still going strong today. As of last year, it was still the second most played game on Steam.
What’s kept Counter-Strike alive? What’s allowed it to resist 15 years of FPS innovation? The guys at Honest Trailers make a honest stab at explaining it. Letting players decorate their weapons like gun-shaped Barbies has a lot to do with it, but in the end, it’s probably just because Valve keeps supporting the damn game. Funny what happens when you don’t shut down the servers after a year or two like most online games.
