Telltale’s Walking Dead series of games is enormously popular, but the second series had painted itself into a corner; after that ending, what do you do with Clementine? Turns out, Telltale has decided to take a parallel step, and follow one of the franchise’s most popular characters, Michonne, instead. Take note, there is a slight comic-book spoiler ahead.
Interestingly, the game will tie directly into the comic, explaining Michonne’s recent, and extended, absence from the series:
The story explores her untold journey during the time between issues No. 126 and No. 139. Through this Telltale Games mini-series of 3 episodes, players will discover what took Michonne away from Rick, Ezekiel, and the rest of her trusted group… and what brought her back.
The game’s connection to other media in the Walking Dead franchise has been relatively oblique, to this point; we’ve met a few characters, but those have tended to be either cameos or prequel appearances. So this is a departure in more ways than one; we’ve yet to hear whether Danai Gurira is reprising her TV role for the game, but it seems likely.
I’m a bit torn because Michonne is something of the Wolverine of The Walking Dead, and also where the show and comic both dump some of the worst cliches. But if nothing else, Telltale can write a game, so I’m intensely curious to see what they do with Michonne. We’ll find out this fall; the three-episode miniseries will debut on pretty much every conceivable platform then.
