A few months back, Nintendo shocked fans by announcing they were entering the mobile market, abandoning their long-held policy of only making games for hardware they designed themselves. Nintendo kept mum about what specific mobile games they were developing, but we now know they’re coming out of the gates as strongly as possible. That’s right, Nintendo is making a Pokémon mobile game.
Pokémon Go is an “augmented reality” game that will let players hunt for and battle Pokémon in the world around them. Not the most groundbreaking concept, but hey, sometimes the most obvious idea is the best one. The game will also be compatible with a watch-like peripheral, so Nintendo won’t entirely be getting out of the hardware game with Pokémon Go.
Pokémon Go is being made by Niantic Labs, a developer that was founded, and, up until a few months ago, owned by Google. So yeah, Nintendo is buddying up with the big boys, and not messing around when it comes to this mobile gaming thing.
Pokémon Go comes out sometime in 2016 on iOS and Android. Surprisingly, Nintendo won’t be making a version of the game for the 3DS, even though the system has augmented reality capabilities. It’s a brave new world, people.
