You might wonder how Sony and Rovio can expand a video game about putting birds in slingshot and smashing buildings with them into a feature movie. The answer, according to the latest Angry Birds trailer, is that they’re expanding the game’s plot substantially, and going for the classics of comedy, namely groin injuries and toilet humor.
No, seriously, the end of the trailer, from 1:45 or so onward, might actually be too gross for some people. Let’s just say you should never run into a giant body of water without asking yourself what the equally giant animal nearby might happen to use it for, and leave it at that. Beyond that, it’s pretty straightforward: The pigs are stealing the birds’ eggs, and nobody listens to our hero because… well, because he’s got a propensity for assaulting people over minor slights, so that plot point makes a lot of sense. Although we hope kids already grasp that beating people up is not a useful communication tool.
The main question, of course, is less how the movie unfolds and more how the movie will perform. Angry Birds isn’t quite the cultural force it once was. Will this movie put these raging avians back on top? We’ll find out May 20.
