Movie trailers these days tend to be scored to pop songs. Sometimes it’s because a song just perfectly suits a trailer, other times it’s a matter of convenience or need, since recording film scores isn’t exactly a quick and easy job. So the company cutting together the first trailer for Assassin’s Creed picked one that seemed to fit the source material: Kanye West’s ode to humility, “I Am A God.” And fans were not pleased.
If you check out the Assassin’s Creed movie’s official Facebook page, fans are fairly consistent in that they love the stabbing but aren’t big on the soundtrack. The good news is that thankfully most of them just seem not to like Kanye instead of spouting racist swill. Well, usually, anyway…
At least some had a sense of humor about it…
Or at least tried to suggest alternatives, although we don’t see how Korn lines up with the Spanish Inquisition either…
Others were pro-Kanye…
Still others had, uh, interesting criticisms about a movie based on a video game to go along with their complaints about the soundtrack…
And others just don’t pay that much attention, considering Ubisoft’s logo is on the trailer:
Fans have gone so far as to “fix” the trailer with music from Woodkid and the game’s original score. If you were wondering, the score will be composed by the director’s brother, Jed Kurzel, who does not appear particularly hip-hop-inclined in his score work.
That said, fans are perhaps overreacting here. The Assassin’s Creed games have generally had good scores, but they’re not particularly memorable. Now, if Kanye turns up as a Templar? All bets are off.
