You’ve all played Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden, right? Well, just in case you haven’t, Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden (full name — Tales of Game’s Presents Chef Boyardee’s Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden, Chapter 1 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa) is a fan made sequel to the Genesis “classic” Barkley, Shut Up and Jam, the movie Space Jam and uh, maybe Shaq Fu too? Phew, that’s a lot of italics.
Basically the game is a surprisingly competent mash-up of two mid-90s mainstays — 16-bit Square-developed RPGs and basketball star vanity games of questionable quality. The game is completely ridiculous and yet feels like something that could have actually existed on the SNES or Genesis back in 1994. It was an era when stuff like Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City really did happen — nobody at the time would’ve batted an eye at an RPG starring Sir Charles Barkley. You can download the game here.
Anyways, I’m pretty jazzed to report that the makers of Barkley: Gaiden are working on a sequel, The Magical Realms of Tír na nÓg: Escape from Necron 7 – Revenge of Cuchulainn: The Official Game of the Movie – Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa. A Kickstarter will going up soon, which means this chapter may end up being an actual game you have to pay for and stuff. This might mean a lot of the “borrowed” assets and characters from the last game might need to be replaced, but I have faith the series’ ballin’ spirit will live on.
