Recently, a Vine went around joking that if you put a tortilla in a record player, it’d automatically play back “Jarabe TapatÃo,” known to white people across America as the Mexican Hat Dance. Rapture Records, a YouTube channel dedicated to the physical nature of vinyl, wanted to see if you could actually do it, though, and so they broke out the laser etcher.
As it turns out, you can, in fact, turn a tortilla into a playable record. All you need is an industrial tool that costs thousands of dollars! According to Rapture, you’ll also need an uncooked tortilla; the cooked version is more likely to shred. Finally, make it a 78; their tests with a 45 rpm tortilla are less “traditional dance” and more “Metal Machine Music.”
