One of the big questions at the end of The Force Awakens is just who Rey’s parents are and why she was abandoned on Jakku. We’ll likely find out in Episode VIII, and Rey’s mother, at least, seems likely to have been cast already. But it might not be a big deal in the plot, according to Rey herself.
Speaking to reporters at the MTV Movie Awards, Daisy Ridley notes two things: One, that she’s known who Rey’s parents are all along, and two, that she doesn’t think they’re all that important:
I think the amazing thing about VII is that Finn and Rey don’t come from anywhere, and they find a place. So to me, it’s funny that people think it’s so important because I don’t really think it is.
Also of note? Ridley isn’t sure Rey is actually a Jedi, which would certainly be an interesting twist on matters. It would also seemingly rule out any Jedi we know as her parents, as that seems to be passed on genetically, and before you ask, she explicitly stated Jyn Erso from Rogue One isn’t Rey’s mother either.
Of course, she could just be messing with nerds, a fine and highly respected pastime. But if it turns out Rey is separate from the characters we knew, that won’t be such a bad thing. One of the nice touches of The Force Awakens is that you can watch it with no knowledge of the last six movies and still enjoy it as a rousing story of adventure. Why give that up?
