There are currently 649 Pokemon. That number will soon soar to over 700. That’s a lot of little cockfighting critters, but none of them have ever been able to match the popularity of the original three starters (well, except Pikachu of course). No matter how many new Pokemon come and go, Squirtle, Charmander and Bulbasaur will always be many gamers’ sentimental favorites.
Well, guess what? Turns out Squirtle, Charmander and Bulbasaur are returning as starters in Pokemon X and Y! But wait, didn’t Nintendo already announce a new trio of starters for the game? What’s going on? Hit the jump for the explanation…
First off, here’s the entire Pokemon X and Y Nintendo Direct presentation if you have 20-minutes to spare.
Basically, in Pokemon X and Y you get to do the “pick a starter from three possibilities” thing twice in the game. First you pick one of the three (somewhat lame) new starters (Chespin, Fennekin and Froakie)…
…then you get to choose one of the original Pokemon’s three starters!
Oh, and Squirtle, Charmander and Bulbasaur are going to have new mega evolutions in the game. Yup, Charizard can get even better in this game.
Interestingly Nintendo also announced a new Pokemon Bank app for the 3DS that will let you store up to 3000 Pokemon via the Internet. Yes, that’s right, Nintendo is doing the cloud storage thing. Didn’t think I’d be typing that sentence for another five to ten years.
I’m afraid to admit I’m getting perilously close to putting a new Pokemon game on my wish list for the first time in over a decade. What about you folks?
