Firefly, Joss Whedon’s space Western that only lasted one season, has been gone from the airwaves for more than a decade at this point. While the cast is game for a reunion, even now, it doesn’t seem likely we’ll ever be returning to Serenity. But that doesn’t mean, of course, that fans can’t dream, like in this trailer.
This is more than a portfolio piece for an animation student; animator Stephen Byrne been working on this for at least a few years. Back in 2014, a production diary detailed all the work that went into making one shot from the trailer, and that’s nine minutes long. In other words, it might be a long, long while before we see any more, although what little there is sure is pleasing to the eye.
The unspoken hope here is that the concept gets picked up and we finally get some new Firefly, at least in cartoon form. And, at this point, an animated series might make the most sense. The whole cast has moved on to other shows, even if Nathan Fillion is suddenly free, and a traditional cartoon might be the only way to capture some of the show’s grandeur on a budget. Besides, Kaylee is adorable even in cartoon form, and that has to count for something.
