PCs, handhelds, mobile, console, indies, triple A, free-to-play — the gaming scene gets more diverse and difficult to follow by the day, but thankfully, I’m here every week to guide you through what’s happening with games.
As always, I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let’s get to it…
This Week’s Dungeon Hack RPG
Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight (3DS, Aug. 4)
The Etrian Odyssey games are super difficult, dry, but nevertheless satisfying dungeon hack RPGs. The Etrian Odyssey Untold spin-off series basically revisits the worlds of each Etrian Odyssey and re-uses them to tell a more character-driven story (usually Etrian Odyssey games feature generic, randomly-rolled characters). So yeah, the Etrian Odyssey Untold games are basically a niche spin-off of a series that was niche as hell to begin with, but they’re well-made and worth checking out if you like obscure handheld stuff.
This Week’s Puzzle Game
Metro Warp (PC, Mac & Linux, Aug. 5)
Metro Warp is a game about helping people get to work. That may not sound too hard, but in the world of Metro Warp folks must navigate through a series of strange, M.C. Escher-like stages and warps to get to their jobs. Looks like some mind-bendy fun. Here’s the game’s Steam page.
This Week’s Indie Platformer
Ink (PC, Aug. 5)
Ink is a platformer in which you can’t actually see the platforms. Or at least you can’t until you’ve splattered them with paint, revealing the contours of the level. Are platformers where you can see where the heck you’re going just too easy for you? Then Ink may be for you. Here’s the game’s Steam page.
This Week’s Boat ‘n’ Climb Adventure
Submerged (PC & PS4, Aug. 4)
Submerged is a new combat-free action-adventure game, in which you explore, platform and boat around a submerged city while looking for help for your injured brother. Submerged certainly looks beautiful for an indie game. Very nearly triple-A quality. It you’re wanting a nice, serene experience, Submerged may be for you.
Pick of the Week
Rare Replay (Xbox One, Aug. 4)
Rare may be a shell of their former selves, but at least they’re getting to celebrate their better years with the release of Rare Replay. From Jetpac to Viva Piñata, Rare Replay contains most of Rare’s best games from their 35-year history (minus Goldeneye 007 and the Donkey Kong stuff, of course).
A bit of a slow week, unless you’re really Rare-ing (eh?) to play some old Banjo-Kazooie games. Any games you’re itching to get your hands on that I failed to mention? Hit the comments and let the world know.
