Guillermo Del Toro Says He’ll Do Whatever Hideo Kojima Wants, Teases Another Collaboration

Last year, Metal Gear Solid-creator Hideo Kojima broke up with publisher Konami, leading to the unfortunate cancellation of Silent Hills, the horror game he was making with Guillermo del Toro. Since then, Kojima has founded a new studio, and he and del Toro have been shamelessly teasing that they may work on something again in the future. Well, the two took the teasing to the next level yesterday, as they were interviewed together at this year’s DICE Summit (a conference for video game developers and publishers).

Del Toro was asked whether he still has an interest in making games after a number of disappointments in the past (Silent Hills wasn’t his first game to fall through) and it sounds like he’s mostly done with trying. Well, with one exception…

“I’m done with games. Except with this man [pointing to Kojima]. I’ll do whatever the f*ck he wants. Now look, I’m like the albatross. I go to THQ and they f*cking go broke. I go with Kojima, you know what happened. The next game we do his f*cking teeth are going to fall out. I’ll do it, but I dunno. I’m 52, I’m only interested in things that motivate me, just having fun, and with Kojima I always have fun.”

Well, that certainly sounds promising, although if I were Kojima, I might think twice. Or at least make sure I had good dental coverage. Kojima is also still up for a collaboration.

“Of course, I’d love to. It’s probably going to be hell, it’s going to be really tough. It’s probably going to be a game or a movie, but I don’t care, we’ll do it.”

The rest of the interview is definitely worth watching, as they delve into a lot of intriguing stuff, like the subject of video games as art and the difference between games and movies. (Del Toro comes off as super fed up with the movie industry.) It’s interesting stuff to say the least. Now, stop teasing us and just make a damn game, guys.
