Kong: Skull Island doesn’t have any monsters yet: It’s aiming for a 2017 release date and still needs to build them. But MTV had a first look at the movie last night, and it told us a lot about the movie while offering up a few unanswered questions.
Back To The ’70s
First off, the movie is set in the Vietnam era, with GIs, Brie Larson’s peacenik photojournalist, Samuel L. Jackson as a big game hunter, and Tom Hiddleston as a former SAS operative. It appears the movie is riffing a bit on Dino De Laurentiis’ notorious ’70s remake, as we see a brief shot of Corey Hawkins in front of what looks like an era-appropriate corporate logo.
There Is, Or Was, More Than One Kong
Well, more so than usual, on an island where giant man-eating slugs are the least of your worries. Most of the shots from the movie we see take place in a fog-shrouded giant monster graveyard of sorts; among the sights are a Kong skeleton and a Triceratops skull. Dinosaurs are pretty common on Skull Island, but the idea that there’s more than one Kong is somewhat new.
Kong Has Yet To Leave The Island
It appears that Skull Island is uncharted and, following up on the Kong/Godzilla shared universe, this will be the beginning of the Monarch organization that figured so prominently in 2014’s Godzilla. So Kong was never found in the ’30s, was never abducted from his home…and there’s a fairly good chance that the team heading to this island has no idea what they’re in for.
It May Be A Race To Get Off Skull Island
From the looks of things, this is more Jurassic Park than Beauty and the Beast. We see a few clips of things unsurprisingly going very wrong on the island–from Samuel L. Jackson’s character setting a massive fire to several military vehicles being trashed–so hopefully everybody’s health insurance is paid up.
There’s likely much more in the way of mystery here. We still don’t know how John Goodman’s politician fits in, or just why everyone’s on the island in the first place. But we won’t have to wait too long: Kong: Skull Island is on the way for March 10, 2017.
