The Wii was obviously a huge smash for Nintendo, so understandably, they’ve tried to replicate that success with the Wii U. Unfortunately, the Wii U has not been terribly successful, and from the sound of it, Nintendo’s not interested in making a third Wii.
Nintendo’s new president Tatsumi Kimishima recently sat down with Time and talked about his company’s next console, codenamed the Nintendo NX. Specifically, he made clear Nintendo’s next machine will be a departure from what Nintendo’s been doing for the past decade-plus…
“I can assure you we’re not building the next version of Wii or Wii U. It’s something unique and different. It’s something where we have to move away from those platforms in order to make it something that will appeal to our consumer base.”
According to recent reports, the Nintendo NX may have some sort of mobile component, and will likely be much more powerful than the Wii U – more in line with the Xbox One and PS4. Of course, none of this is confirmed, but we may find out the true nature of the NX sooner than you might think.
Apparently, Chinese electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn has been chosen to produce Nintendo’s next console, and they expect to begin production in the first quarter of 2016, possibly for a mid-2016 release. That seems awfully soon, but then again, it has felt like Nintendo’s been preparing the dump the poor Wii U for a while now.
What do you Nintendo fans think? Will we be seeing the Nintendo NX next year? What do you want out of a new Nintendo console?
