There’s not a phrase that raises more hope, or creates more anxiety, among gamers than The Last of Us 2. The first game was almost perfect, and Naughty Dog didn’t exactly end it on a sequel hook. But it looks like we’ll be getting one.
Screen Rant has done a good job of collecting the latest evidence that The Last of Us 2 is on the way, starting with the fact that writer Josh Scherr mentioned “the first game” only to audibly mention he shouldn’t have said that, and that one of the developer’s core creative team put out this tweet:
Look, Valve, all I'm saying is you give us the Half Life license and we'll take care of the rest. 😉 https://t.co/XkrWjtfXyJ

For those unfamiliar, that’s Merle Dandridge, who played the leader of the resistance in the first game. Considering that Nolan North is also coming back, either the sequel will have a few flashbacks or Naughty Dog really sticks with the actors it casts. Although Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker, who played Ellie and Joel in the first game, have been hanging out together, so really it’s still up for grabs.
Personally, if we’ve got to have a second game, I’m rooting for either a prequel or a story unconnected to the first one where we perhaps see how Ellie and Joel are doing, but don’t linger on them. It’s a hard, bleak world in The Last of Us, and there are plenty of stories you can tell in it.
