The Marvel Universe just added a certain Canadian character to their arsenal and it just so happens to be the country’s leader, Justin Trudeau. The certified “hot” Prime Minister will be gracing the alternate cover for issue No. 5 of Marvel’s Civil War II: Choosing Sides, which will be available August, 31.
Toronto-based illustrator Ramon Perez did the cover, which has a grinning Trudeau sitting in the corner of a boxing ring suited up in a Canadian flag themed tank top, black shorts, and, of course, boxing gloves. Surrounding him are Sasquatch, Puck, and Aurora, who are members of the Canadian Alpha Flight. Standing off in the far corner is Iron Man. Perez told CBC about what he wanted to show the cover.
“I didn’t want to do a stuffy cover — just like a suit and tie — put his likeness on the cover and call it a day. I wanted to kind of evoke a little bit of what’s different about him than other people in power right now. You don’t see (U.S. President Barack) Obama strutting around in boxing gear, doing push-ups in commercials or whatnot. Just throwing him in his gear and making him almost like an everyday person was kind of fun.”
Being a comic book hero (and Prime Minister) runs in the Trudeau family. His later father and former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau appeared as a character in “Uncanny X-Men” in 1979, but believe it or not, Justin Trudeau wasn’t the first choice for a Canadian celebrity to appear in Civil War II: Choosing Sides. Writer Chip Zdarsky told CBC that Trudeau is the second most popular celebrity in Canada, with the first being Drake, but he wasn’t able to get the rapper to grace the pages of the comic.
