A couple of weeks ago, we were teased into believing that Frank Ocean’s long-anticipated new studio album, Boys Don’t Cry — the follow-up to 2012’s Channel Orange — would be released by now, but we’re still waiting (impatiently). The elusive 28-year-old artist has always maintained a low-key presence when it comes to interviews and fan interactions, but his frequent collaborator, Malay, appeared on a Reddit AMA and offered some insight despite his initial refusal to discuss anything pertaining to Ocean or the new tracks.
One fan, though, expressed frustration that couldn’t be ignored and said he’d felt let down and had lost some trust in the artist. Malay then assured fans that the new works are being polished and that it’s no slight to them. Frank Ocean, after all, is a deeply introspective artist who’s just trying to make sure that he’s putting the best possible work out there. He posted:
“First of all we all massively appreciate and love you guys, Frank has told me this himself many times. To be fair tho, art cannot be rushed. It’s about making sure the perfect aesthetic for the situation has been reached, to do that, takes constant tweaking, trial and error.. That goes for any creative sitution [sic]”
Also noteworthy is that Malay signed off the Reddit AMA by posting, “see y’all at the booty club,” a reference which had come up repeatedly throughout the conversation. This, with addition to a screenshot of an MP3 file entitled “Booty Club” has fans speculating that it could be the name of a single, or a nickname for the album itself.
Malay then added, “everyone will get a ticket to the booty club who wants one.” Hopefully that will be sooner than later.
