The chemistry, the compassion, and the love between Jemma Simmons and Leo Fitz can be felt in every episode of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Not only do they finish each others sentences (and sandwiches) but they have been friends for ages and still remain friends now. But after all they've been through, the big questions remains, will they ever say “I love you”?
In a recent interview with EW, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen said that “Their relationship will visibly change forever” in this week's upcoming episode of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”. “We care very much about this unrequited love story that we”ve built since the beginning. This is the episode where they both will express their feelings finally about everything that”s gone down.”
Fitz and Simmons have endured a rocky road together in their near three years on Coulson's team. They were clearly close when they first started working on the Bus, but since then they have been pulled apart in over a half dozen traumatic ways. First Jemma contracted an alien disease which forced her to jump out of a plane to save her life. Then she and Fitz almost downed at the bottom of the ocean. They were both rescued (thank you Nick Fury) but Fitz suffered a severe brain injury that left him mentally and verbally impaired. Simmons then went undercover with Hydra, leaving Fitz all alone to cope with his injury.
They were finally restored to each other in the season two finale, but their restoration didn't last long, as Jemma was sucked into a portal onto an alien world. Jemma's journey of survival led her into the arms of another man and Fitz's struggle to find her nearly cost him his life. Finally Fitz and Jemma found each other, after having to literally go through hell. Now they are both home and both ready to talk, but can their love survive all that they've been through?
We'll find out this week on the new “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” episode, “Many Heads, One Tail.”
“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” airs Tuesdays at 9/10C on ABC.
