“Furious 7” may have sputtered on Friday, but it easily took the rest of the three-day frame to remain the no. 1 movie in America for four straight weeks. The Universal Pictures release is the second film to pull that feat off this year after “American Sniper.” “Furious” earned another $18.2 million for a monstrous $320.5 million domestic. Internationally, “Furious” crossed the $1 billion mark which puts its worldwide total at $1.32 billion. Historically, it's now the fifth highest grossing film globally ever ahead of “Frozen's” $1.274 billion and behind “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2's” $1.341 billion. It should pass “Potter” sometime next weekend.
“Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” continued to live off family audiences dropping just 34.8% from its opening weekend for another $15.5 million and $43.8 million in its first 10 days. The Sony Pictures release won't come anywhere near the original's $146 million gross, but with a budget of just $30 million could eventually break even for the studio.
“The Age of Adaline” opened no. 1 on Friday, but stumbled to place third overall by Sunday. The Lionsgate release earned $13.3 million in its debut. With a reported $25 million production budget it will need good word of mouth to eventually come close to breaking even.
DreamWorks Animation's “Home” continued to play well dropping only 21.8% from the previous frame for another $8.3 million and $153.7 million overall. Distributed by 20th Century Fox, the animated tale has now taken in $281 million worldwide.
Universal Pictures' “Unfriended” rounded out the top five with another $6.2 million and $25.1 million in just 10 days. The micro-budgeted horror flick should easily cross the $30 million mark and be profitable for the studio.
Notably, A24's “Ex Machina” expanded to 1,255 theaters and earned $5.4 million for $6.9 million to date. It's the single biggest weekend in the lauded distributors short history.
Overseas, “Avengers: Age of Ultron” got off to a massive start with $201.2 million. It debuts in the U.S. on Friday.
Final weekend actuals are released on Monday.
