It looks like you can't put a Walt Disney Studios release down. Even after “Tomorrowland” took the top spot at Friday's box office many observers believed that it would fall behind “Pitch Perfect 2” for the weekend crown. Instead, the Brad Bird picture has shown some solid resiliency despite just a B Cinemascore and very mixed reviews.
“Tomorrowland” is estimated to make $32.1 million for the three-day and up to $40 million for the entire Memorial Day weekend. That's below pre-release polling which predicted a $50 million four-day, but it's an OK start for the reportedly $190 million production.
“Pitch Perfect 2” took the second slot with another $30.3 million and $117.7 million in just 10 days. That's almost double what the original “Pitch Perfect” earned in 2012.
“Mad Max: Fury Road” weathered “Tomorrowland” and “Poltergeist” coming into the marketplace for another $23.8 million and $87.3 million so far. At this point, it looks like George Miller's critically acclaimed action flick will end up with $125-130 million overall.
“Poltergeist” wasn't that far behind “Mad Max” earning $23 million over the three-day. That's not bad considering the terrible C+ Cinemascore and a 33% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The 20th Century Fox reboot reportedly cost $35 million to make.
“Avengers: Age of Ultron” remained in the top five with another $20.8 million and $404 million through Sunday. “Age of Ultron” becomes just the first picture to cross the $400 million mark since “Frozen” and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” hit that magical milestone after opening in Nov. of 2013. While it won't reach the heights of the first “Avengers,” the follow up should earn at least $450 million domestic. Globally, it's surpassed $1.2 billion.
New films opening on Friday include “Aloha” and “San Andreas.”
Final box office actuals will be released on Tuesday.
