Drivers, start your engines! It appears that the famed racing comedy, Cannonball Run is back for another lap across America.
Deadline is reporting that Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder, Men in Black 3) is attached to both write and direct the film about the cross-country dash. According to the publication, Warner Bros, which owns the rights to the project, views the new Cannonball as more of a “relaunch” rather than a “remake.”
The 1981 original featured Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise as well as cameos by Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Farrah Fawcett and a slew of celebs from the era. Its box office success (an inflation adjusted $187 million) led to two more films, The Cannonball Run II (1984) and Cannonball Fever (1989).
Andre Morgan, who served as executive producer of the original and the two follow ups, as well as Alan Gasmer (Vikings) are attached to produce.
