I spent part of Wednesday morning at a special event for Disney Consumer Products, looking at toys and clothing and home video releases for the rest of 2014. One of the Blu-rays that they were most excited about was “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and why not? At this point, Marvel's as close to a sure bet as there is in this industry.
I'm excited to get my hands on the Blu-ray so I can see the film again. I know there are deleted scenes on there, and there will no doubt be a whole fistful of extras, and just to show you what you can expect, we've got a special little sneak peek today.
At this point, I've interviewed Chris Evans about this character enough times to have a pretty good handle on his take. He's used this phrase with me before, “meat and potatoes,” and it's one of the many virtues of “Winter Soldier” that the action is, for the most part, hand-to-hand combat. It's something that Chris Evans is good at, and especially in the sequel, he makes it clear that Cap is a lethal fighter, capable of enormous damage in a very short burst of activity.
I'm curious to see where they take his solo adventures. Evans is a fascinating lead to me precisely because of how reluctant he seems about it off-screen. It translates to an uneasiness that seems appropriate for Steve Rogers, man out of time, a trained weapon who hasn't really had a chance to be a person.
This short video is basically just a taste of the behind-the-scenes material, but I'm curious to see more of the work they did to make these fights so kinetic and to give them such a sharp sense of impact. There are making of featurettes, an audio commentary, deleted scenes, bloopers, and it'll be available in Digital 3D, HD & SD, 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack, and Blu-ray.
“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will be on Blu-ray and DVD on September 9th, and you can see it early on Digital 3D, HD, and Disney Movies Everywhere August 19th.
