Things are slowly coming around for Greta Gerwig. Ever since the indie actress first got the industry’s attention in mumblecore indies such as “Baghead” and “Hannah Takes the Stairs,” her growing fanbase has been waiting for the rest of the world to catch up to her unique charms.
Gerwig got a big break when Noah Baumbach cast her opposite Ben Stiller in his dramedy “Greenberg,” but supporting roles in follow up films “Arthur” and “No Strings Attached” didn’t necessarily showcase her talents. The spring and summer of 2012 is turning out to be a different story, however, as Gerwig has three films to shine in. The first was Whit Stillman’s comeback comedy “Damsels in Distress” which featured Gerwig as the leader of a trio of preppy college girls with strange ideas about dealing with depression (cough, tap dancing). The 28-year-old actress is also part of Woody Allen’s latest ensemble, “To Rome With Love,” which has already opened in Europe, but hits the U.S. at the end of June. The big star-making opportunity for Gerwig though is Daryl Wein’s “Lola Versus.”
The Fox Searchlight dramedy finds Gerwig as a Lola, an almost 30-year-old dealing with the ups and downs of finding herself among the strange men of modern day Manhattan. Yes, it’s a story you might have seen before, but Wein’s characters and co-star Joel Kinnaman’s charismatic performance make it seem fresher than you’d expect. And if you’re a fan of Lena Dunham’s HBO series “Girls” you’ll likely enjoy Wein’s similarly themed world.
Searchlight was kind enough to provide an exclusive clip to HitFix featuring Lola (Gerwig) and two of her unexpected friends played by Zoe Lister Jones and Hamish Linklater. Note, this scene takes place at the beginning of the movie, so everything might not be as it seems. In any case, a fun intro into the comical world of “Lola Versus.”
“Lola Versus” opens in New York and Los Angeles on June 8.
