Martin Freeman has joined the cast of “Captain America: Civil War.”
Freeman's one of those guys who sort of bubbled along for a while, recognizable from his work on “The Office,” but hardly a household name, and then all of a sudden he went nuclear. Between “Sherlock” and the “Hobbit” movies, he has become far more recognizable and culturally omnipresent in the last five years, and I'm all for it. He turns in continuously great work in everything, and I love seeing him in something like last year's “Fargo,” something I would have never expected to see him in.
“Captain America: Civil War” fits into that category. In typical Marvel fashion, they are playing it close to the vest as to who he is playing. I'm having a hard time picturing him as a superhero, and I'm curious to see if this is a sizable role. There are so many characters that have to be serviced here that I can't imagine too many people will be cast to just hold a place onscreen. Whoever he's playing, one can only hope there is a reason for him to run into Doctor Strange at some point.
Can we start the entirely irresponsible and ridiculous rumor that he's Spider-Man?
No?
Fine. We'll see who he really is when “Captain America: Civil War” arrives in theaters on May 6, 2016. See you in a year.
