MARVEL TELEVISION BLACK SITE, CALIFORNIA. For “Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” star Chloe Bennet, the process of integration into the Marvel Universe has been gradual.
Bennet's Skye started out as a hacker thorn-in-the-side of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team and, if we've being honest, a lot of fans didn't really love her.
But then an interesting thing happened and Skye became an increasingly integrated S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and proved herself capable of helping save the world and that, plus a new hairstyle, helped viewers begin to embrace the character, while also wondering about her potential secrets.
Well, in the “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” fall finale, Marvel enthusiasts finally discovered who Skye truly is and let's just say that the excitement has grown exponentially.
Of course, casual viewers who don't know what an “Inhuman” is and don't gain any insight at all from learning that Skye's name is really “Daisy Johnson” still don't know who or what Skye is and Skye doesn't realistically know who or what she is.
Early this week, Bennet sat down with reporters on the highly secretive and stealthy “Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” set and discussed those revelations and what's coming when “S.H.I.E.L.D.” returns next week.
But if you're still in the dark, you may not want to click through and read what Bennet had to say about her evolving character.
“Growing up with six brothers, I”ve never really seen any Disney princess movies like ever actually, so I”ve always wanted to be an action star or action hero more than I ever wanted to be any sort of Disney princess. It”s been a dream for a while so it”s been cool,” Bennet told the assembled press.
For this interview, Bennet was in the rarest of positions for stars of the notoriously hush-hush show, the position of being [relatively] forthcoming. See, thanks to the midseason finale, we at least know certain truths about Skye, but Bennet was doing her interview paired with new cast addition Luke Mitchell and over the course of 14 minutes, there wasn't a darned thing he could say.
“[T]hey told me probably about two days before,” Bennet said of the fall-finale reveals. “but I found out and kept it a secret, which is really impressive for me, like two weeks beforehand.”
She joked, “I thought I was She-Hulk for a while, so I”d been working out a lot.”
On the day we were on set, “Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” was shooting Episode 18 for the season, which means that they've already traveled a great distance from next Tuesday's (March 3) spring return, which is fittingly titled “Aftershocks.” It's spoiling nothing to say that as we return, Skye is still in the most preliminary stages of figuring out the effects of the Terrigen mist and she's a long way from having anybody call her Daisy, much less Quake. But it sounds like some of that is coming, because Bennet has begun to experience the glitz and glamour of wielding powers that will have to be added in later by computer wizards.
“People think it”s really awesome. And it”s really awesome post-production once you have powers but while you”re shooting it, nothing feels more dumb than pretending that you”re awesome with powers and not having any powers at all,” Bennet admitted. “You”re just in a room with a bunch of dudes with cameras and you”re just pretending to have earthquake powers and that”s just a little weird. But it”s really, really awesome. I haven”t seen anything yet but I”m sure it”s awesome once everything”s done. You have to have a lot of trust in the rest of production at that point.”
The Skye/Daisy “S.H.I.E.L.D.” storyline hit just weeks after Marvel's Kevin Feige announced that an “Inhumans” movie will be released on July 12, 2019, which puts the ABC series in the interesting position of introducing the general Inhumans concept to non-comic-readers.
“It”s really cool because the day I found out was the day they announced all the movies, or like the day after,” Bennet recalled. “I was like, ''The Inhumans' movie? Who”s going to be in that one?!' I”m really excited. I don”t know. Obviously, I don”t know anything. If I was going to be in those, they”d tell me like the day of.”
For now, there's little doubt that Bennet and Mitchell are just enjoying their small-screen Inhumans experience.
“We”ll be shooting scenes where we”re both doing Inhumans stuff and it”s crazy and really fun,” Bennet laughed. And then it”s really weird to go to the grocery store afterwards after pretending to have powers and doing all this crazy Marvel stuff, you go and you”re like, 'Do I want basmati rice or do I want brown rice?' It”s weird but it”s fun.”
“Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” returns to ABC at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3.
