Remember a couple of weeks ago when Marvel released some diversity-filled promotional art for ALL-NEW ALL-DIFFERENT MARVEL? Among the familiar faces were both Spider-Man and Ultimate Spider-Man, indicating that at long last Marvel was bringing Miles Morales into the main continuity.
The assumption was half right. Miles” is indeed joining the roster for ALL-NEW Marvel, but not as Ultimate Spider-Man. Now he”s just Spider-Man. Full stop.
NY Daily News got the exclusive: a fitting tribute to Spider-Man”s hometown.
Starting this fall, SPIDER-MAN relaunches as a brand new series, with Miles under the iconic webbed mask. Peter Parker is described in the article as a grown-up mentor to Morales”.
“[This is] not Spider-Man with an asterisk, it”s the real Spider-Man for kids of color, for adults of color and everybody else,”said writer and co-creator Brian Bendis. “[Miles Morales means] a great deal to a great many people.”
Of course, this begs the question: Who was in Miles' old suit in that ALL-NEW ALL-DIFFERENT promotional art?
For those who don”t know who Morales is, a quick primer. Back in 2011, Peter Parker was murdered in the ULTIMATE Marvel universe while trying to save the Morales. The child of a black father and Puerto Rican mother, Miles grew up in Brooklyn hearing about the exploits of Spider-Man. So when the teen – who was bitten by a Oscorp-enhanced spider months before – arrived too late to help the original Spider-Man, he was wracked with grief. Determined to not fail again, Miles donned a spider-suit in Peter Parker”s honor.
ALL-NEW ALL-DIFFERENT SPIDER-MAN swings into stores this autumn.
