Movie Trailers are the best. And when done right, they can be as satisfying as watching the film itself. Here are my favorites of 2015. There was a lot to sift through but at the end of the day, if it showed up in this list, then it was something that I could instantly recall.
In no particular order…
Mad Max: Fury Road
When the first trailer dropped for 'MM:FR', I was so incredibly happy I didn't know what to do with myself other than watch the trailer on repeat for three days straight. It was a long eight months until we got our next sneak peek at what is arguably the best film of the year.
What I like the most out of the second trailer is the incorporation of Junkie XL's blistering score.
Suicide Squad
I wasn't super hyped on this film when it was announced that David Ayer was going to direct the big-screen adaptation. But holy moly, this trailer definitely “won” Comic-Con in July. Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn without a doubt steals every scene she is in and I can only imagine she will steal the flick away from Jared Leto.
I'm still a bit puzzled why they didn't just use the original Bee Gees version of “I Started a Joke”.
Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Force Awakens
The trailer heard ’round the world. Kicking off this year”s Star Wars Celebration, the second trailer and first full-length look at 2015's most anticipated film raised more questions then it answered. I must admit, I”m not a huge ‘Star Wars” guy but when Harrison Ford uttered “Chewie, we”re home”, I got chills.
Goodnight Mommy
Our own Chris Eggertsen called this “the scariest trailer I”ve seen in a long time”. He was absolutely right. Austrian filmmakers Severin Fiala and Veronica Franz crafted a tone like no other. It”s safe to say that the film did not live up to the trailer or the hype but when you concoct a tight trailer like this, you”re already way ahead of the game.
Joy
David O. Russell has such a command over music. He”s one of the all-time greats at picking the perfect soundtrack. Look at 2013″s ‘American Hustle” and its use of Led Zeppelin”s “Good Times Bad Times”. Say what you will about the film (which I adored) but that is how you cut a trailer.
If we learned anything from ‘American Hustles” trailer and the energy it ultimately evoked, the use of Alabama Shakes “Sound & Color” blended with The Rolling Stones “You Can”t Always Get What You Want” should be a clear indication of what kind of movie we are in for. And frankly, after watching this trailer about twenty times. Sign me up.
Black Mass
One of my favorite types of trailer is when they lift a scene or a performance from the movie and showcase it. It”s such a bold move and one that pays off in our first look at Johnny Depp as James “Whitey” Bulger. Everything just works in these two minutes and the pay off is spectacular. Bravo to the editor on this one.
The Revenant
It”s not like we needed more proof of how awesome Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy were. The only bad part of this trailer is that we have to wait until 2016 to be collectively blown away by this film.
The Hateful Eight
Quentin Tarantino. That”s it. That is all that needs to be said. I can only imagine how good Jennifer Jason Leigh is going to be in this film.
