Getting tickets to Hamilton is nigh impossible, but seeing the hit Broadway show in its entirety may someday not be – if you”re willing to have your Hamilton experience not be live.
The production in the Richard Rodgers Theatre will be filmed before Lin-Manuel Miranda exits the lead role. Miranda confirmed the date of his final performance date (July 9) and talked about the plans to film the show with reporters at a breakfast event this morning.
Miranda is departing the show after a long run in the role of the ten-dollar founding father – the musical debuted off-Broadway in January 2015 before moving to the Rodgers last July. Next stop for Miranda: Hollywood. He will star alongside Emily Blunt in Mary Poppins Returns, he has Moana with his original music opening this November, and he”s producing a film adaptation of his first Tony-winning musical In the Heights. And we”re sure there are plenty more projects to come for Miranda in Tinseltown.
As for what exactly is happening to the footage of the show, Miranda says he doesn”t know, throwing in a Harry Potter reference as he tweeted that it”s likely to remain tucked away unseen for a while.

So it won”t be live on pay-per-view like Laura Benanti-Zachary Levi show She Loves Me (recently announced to be the first Broadway show broadcast live). Hamilton is probably really being filmed for posterity with no real plan of where and when that footage will show up. But maybe the Hamilton original cast* show will end up on TV too eventually or maybe for limited events screened in movie theaters. One can hope.
*By original cast, we”re not sure whether they mean the true original Broadway cast – Miranda will be there but already exited cast members like Jonathan Groff may not be back for this taping.
In the meantime, catch segments of Hamilton staged for the Tony Awards telecast, look forward to the PBS documentary, and pray you”ll get to see the touring cast somewhere someday soon. And listen to that cast recording for the 14,289th time.
