With the aid of stellar costuming and production design, period piece TV shows have transported viewers back to eras long past.

Shows like “Mad Men” and “Happy Days” have given TV watchers nostalgia trips and have presented social commentary on both yesteryear and our own time.

This Thursday, ABC will add a new period show to primetime: “The Astronauts” Wives Club,” based on the book by Lily Koppel – in turn based on the true story of the wives of the Mercury Seven astronauts – will transport viewers to the 1950s.
