Repeats of “Criminal Minds” and “CSI: Cyber” helped CBS win Wednesday night overall, but the Stanley Cup opener between Chicago and Tampa Bay gave NBC a commanding victory in the key demographic.
The hockey game was up a hair from last year's Game 1.
Remember that NBC's hockey is subject to change due to the nature of live events.
Results for Wednesday's originals were largely negative with small key demo drops for “MasterChef” and “Celebrity Wife Swap,” plus a steep 36 percent key demo decline for “The Briefcase.”
Let's get to the numbers…
Among adults 18-49, NBC averaged a 1.8 rating for Wednesday night, tops in the key demographic. FOX was second with a 1.3 key demo rating, followed by ABC's 1.0 key demo rating and the 0.9 key demo rating for CBS. The CW averaged a 0.3 key demo rating for the night.
Overall, though, CBS averaged an estimated 5.8 million viewers and a 3.8 rating/7 share for Wednesday night, beating NBC's 5.46 million viewers and a 3.3/6. FOX's 3.97 million viewers and 2.4/4 edged out the 3.94 million viewers and 2.6/5 for ABC. The CW averaged 911,000 viewers and a 0.6/1 for the night.
8 p.m. – “The Briefcase” won the 8 p.m. hour overall for CBS with 5.39 million viewers, but finished third with a 0.9 rating among adults 18-49. NBC's hockey game averaged 5 million viewers and a 1.5 key demo rating, edging out the 4.6 million viewers and 1.4 key demo rating for FOX's “MasterChef.” ABC's repeats of “The Middle” and “The Goldbergs” finished fourth with 4.19 million viewers and tied for third with a 0.9 key demo rating. The CW's “Arrow” repeat averaged 1.01 million viewers and a 0.3 key demo rating.
9 p.m. – CBS stayed on top overall in the 9 p.m. hour with 6.13 million viewers for a “Criminal Minds” repeat, which finished fourth with a 1.0 rating among adults 18-49. NBC's Stanley Cup action was second with 5.45 million viewers and comfortably won the hour with a 1.8 key demo rating. ABC's repeats of “Modern Family” and “Black-ish” averaged 4.12 million viewers to top the 3.34 million viewers for FOX's “Bullseye,” while both networks averaged a 1.1 key demo rating. The CW's “Supernatural” averaged 816,000 viewers and a 0.2 key demo rating.
10 p.m. – NBC's hockey finally took first overall with 5.94 million viewers in the 10 p.m. hour and dominated with a 2.0 rating among adults 18-49. CBS' “CSI: Cyber” was second with 5.87 million viewers and third with a 0.9 key demo rating, compared to the 3.51 million viewers and 1.0 key demo rating for ABC's “Celebrity Wife Swap.”
