Say what you will about Floyd Mayweather Jr., but one thing is undeniable: the man has mastered the sport of boxing. That is exactly why US Olympian Shakur Stevenson decided to listen to Floyd over the advice of his own coaches during his latest victory in Rio.
Stevenson admitted that he got “a little nervous” when he saw Floyd speaking with his coaches during his fight Mongolia’s Tsendbaatar Erdenebat but he won the bout thanks to Floyd’s help and despite the nerves. “He kept saying ‘jab,’ and (my coaches) kept saying ‘go to the body,’” Stevenson said after the bout. “I heard him a lot. He has been in the same situation before, and he mastered boxing. He’s one of the greatest, so of course I gotta listen to him.”
Now Stevenson moves on to the semi-final round on Thursday, where he’s guaranteed a Bronze medal no matter the result. Stevenson was in line to face Michael Conlan from Ireland, but he was upset in a controversial decision that resulted in him berating the entire AIBA in a profanity-laced tirade on live television.
The semi-final bout gives Stevenson the chance to surpass Floyd’s own Olympic journey back in 1996 in Atlanta, where he lost to Bulgaria’s Serafim Todorov in a widely criticized robbery, before going on to never lose as a professional
