Happy Halloweekend, everyone! As things draw more grim and dark for the big day on Saturday, we have a few ghoulish offerings of new albums this week. The frozen head of Walt Disney is releasing a new compilation featuring today’s best indie and pop artists alike, Fall Out Boy wants to make things a little more “Psycho,” and Puscifer is another fiendish record from the mind of Tool’s Maynard James Keenan.
There’s also new stuff from indie supergroup EL VY, new up and comers Beach Slang, the Amy soundtrack, dark wave producer Pictureplane, and more. Here’s what you need to hear this week.
Various Artists – We Love Disney
Say what you will about enjoying Disney songs as an adult, but they are some of the most well-written songs of the 20th century. And this note was certainly taken to heart by the many artists who jumped at the chance to be on the new compilation, We Heart Disney. From smaller artists like Kacey Musgraves, Jessie Ware, and Jhene Aiko to big names like Fall Out Boy and Jason Derulo, everyone wants to jump on those iconic classic tracks that Disney has made famous for more than 70 years. And their respective unique spins on the songs really are what make this album worthwhile.
Fall Out Boy – Make America Psycho Again
With the success of American Beauty/American Psycho, Fall Out Boy decided to make an album that’s a little out of their comfort zone, or anyone else’s, in Make America Psycho Again. This rap remix album features some of hip-hop’s hottest rhymers like Migos, Black Thought from The Roots, Juicy J, Big K.R.I.T., ILoveMakonnen, and more. While this album seems like it would be something that no one could want, the tracks we’ve heard so far are a pretty sharp and slick marriage between the two ideas. They’ve collaborated with hip-hop artists before like Big Sean and Wiz Khalifa, now it’s just in a proper effort.
Puscifer – Money Shot
Despite his rough and sometimes prickly demeanor, Maynard James Keenan always has his followers in the palm of his hand. The mastermind behind iconic hard rock bands like Tool and A Perfect Circle is back with another record from his solo band Puscifer. We first heard a preview of their new album, Money Shot, back in the summer with their single, “Grand Canyon.” While Puscifer is more spacious than his other bands, Maynard always knows how to tip-toe the line between menacing and inviting. While he may be done with Tool — though never say never — this latest effort should serve his fans just as well.
