The clock kid saga continues. Texas high school student Ahmed Mohamed was arrested in September for bringing a homemade clock to school. He then garnered support from #IStandWithAhmed Twitter users and President Obama against the school officials and police officers who thought he had brought a “hoax bomb” to school. Now, he’s moving to Qatar after receiving a full scholarship to study there.
As Buzzfeed reports, Mohamed will join the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development’s Young Innovators Program. His family will move with him, and the scholarship will cover the rest of his high school studies, as well as his entire undergraduate education.
Mohamed expressed excitement about attending a Qatar Foundation school. “I think I will learn a lot and also have lots of fun there,” he said in a statement. Mohamed’s family also released a statement thanking everyone for their support: “From the White House to Sudan, to Mecca, we have been welcomed by a variety of individuals, businesses and educational institutions, which have all provided Ahmed with real encouragement and the ambition to continue to work hard.”
It’s been a big two days for Mohamed. He met President Obama on Monday, the night before this announcement, for Astronomy Night.
