You’ve got to hand it to Bill Maher. He’s been on television for over 20 years and he still throws out some of the most eyebrow raising political comments. During a special Democratic National Convention edition of Real Time on HBO, the outspoken pundit voiced what many had thought about a specific part of Hillary Clinton’s speech: “Was anybody surprised that in the first minute of the speech, she referenced the blow job?”
Of course, Hillary didn’t really mention the infamous Monica Lewinsky blow job scandal. But early in her speech, she did seem to give a small acknowledgement to the accusations of cheating and sexual misconduct that have followed her husband Bill around far past just the Lewinsky incident.
“And Bill, that conversation we started in the law library 45 years ago is still going strong,” she said. “It’s lasted through good times that filled us with joy, and hard times that tested us. And I’ve even gotten a few words in along the way.”
That’s about as understated and classy a way to gloss over all that ugly history than Maher’s statement really gives her credit for. It’s probably not the only time all of that is going to come up. Now that the nominees for Republican and Democratic candidates are official, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are about to go head to head non-stop from now until November. The question isn’t if Donald Trump will be bringing all that up, it’s when and how much.
The Donald already went ahead and threw together some attack ads back in May regarding the accusations of sexual assault against Bill Clinton, and word is he plans on making Hillary squirm during the debates by bringing up some of the many sordid tales that came out of those “hard times that tested us.” As always, this is an election season that continues to be anything but boring.
As far as Bill Maher is concerned, though, Americans need to start wrapping their heads around the idea that love really can exist in a relationship where infidelity has occurred.
“I gotta say, I always thought that the Clintons had a real marriage, despite what everybody said,” he continued. “’It’s a marriage of convenience. It’s an arranged marriage.’ Blah, blah, blah. You know what? F**king around can live side by side with real love. Bill is a dog and he loves her. Two thoughts in your mind. Europeans can do that. We should be able to, too.”
