With less than 100 days left until the general election, Donald Trump’s still squeezing in every rally possible. The real estate mogul could surely afford to take a few days away from the spotlight, and with the week he’s having, perhaps that would be a good idea. You know, just a little break from angering people and upping the ante before achieving the truly outlandish. Trump would be wise to retreat a bit from his performance art and make his supporters (and the media) miss him.
In contrast, Hillary Clinton hasn’t been shying away from fundraisers or rallies, but she’s been content to let Trump monopolize the spotlight. It’s not a bad strategy, but Clinton decided to let loose in the above video, which was captured after a Las Vegas event. A CNN reporter asked what Clinton thinks of Trump outsourcing so much of his production overseas, including his Trump ties. She appeared to relish the moment and didn’t hold back: “You know, when you run for president, you need to be judged by what you have done and I think the evidence is pretty clear … He’s not put Americans to work.”
Clinton pointed towards Trump’s continued use of cheap foreign labor to staff his Florida estate. And she ripped his reported habit of cheating contractors (and getting sued for it), which she takes “personally” because her own dad worked by contract. And then she went in for the final kill: “And I’ve met people who were destroyed by Donald Trump,” she said, “so take a look at what he’s done, not what he says.” Her sentiment echoed VP nominee Tim Kaine’s DNC speech (although he was talking about Trump’s fear-mongering tactics), and perhaps this is a sign of Clinton shifting into attack mode outside of rally and formal interview settings. We’ll see if she keeps this trend up, or if this off-script rant was simply a blip.
