It’s no secret that Donald Trump’s campaign is an unmitigated disaster at this point, with the gaffes over the past week piling up too high even to count. From major issues like his unapologetic feud with the Khan family to ludicrous ones like throwing a dang baby out of a rally, the former Apprentice host is leaving the GOP scrambling at how to fix this mess.
Trump’s campaign chairman Paul Manafort appeared on CBS This Morning Thursday in an attempt to do some damage control — specifically regarding the candidate’s refusal to endorse House Speaker Paul Ryan in his upcoming primary election — and, uh, he might not have made things better.
Host Norah O’Donnell asked Manafort point blank what he thought of Trump’s own running mate Mike Pence sending a mixed message by coming out in support of Ryan, but the chairman dismissed the controversy, claiming that “Paul Ryan is a close personal friend of Mike Pence,” and that “Donald Trump understood that relationship.”
When pressed whether Manafort himself supports Paul Ryan, however, he dropped the following bombshell:
I support him as a speaker and I know after next week I’m going to be supporting him as a candidate for president too — I mean…
Manafort is quick to laugh off the slip-up, but the question must be asked: Was it a slip up? Or are the Republicans cooking up an eleventh-hour scheme to salvage this election? Either way, it doesn’t look good for Trump during a week when he’s already taken hit after hit.
