A quick review of last night's “The Mindy Project” season finale coming up just as soon as the needle goes around a second time…
All signs seem to be pointing toward “Best Man” being the last new “Mindy” episode on FOX. The question is if some other outlet (Netflix? Hulu? NBC, whose sister studio produces it?) wants to pick it up, banking on the small audience being a loyal one, or if “Hi, I'm Danny Castellano, and I'm in love with your daughter” was the show's final moment.
If that was it for “Mindy,” I'll be disappointed. The show never really figured out what to do with the many different iterations of its supporting cast(*), but the dialogue's sharp and funny, and that central relationship has remained one of the best, most interesting opposites-attract pairings in recent memory. “Best Man” did a nice job of balancing the comical aspects of their relationship with the more serious material, and both Chris Messina and Mindy Kaling were really strong in the episode's more dramatic closing moments.
(*) If “Mindy” does move to a streaming service, one advantage might be an excuse to pare the cast down to the essentials of Mindy, Danny and Morgan, and just keep rotating in guest stars, which the show has always done better by (case in point: Laura Dern as the cheerfully rude Eastern European OB/GYN, or the return of four of Mindy's exes) than many of its ongoing characters.
What did everybody else think? Do you want to see what happens next with Danny and Mindy (and her parents), or would you be okay with his big grand gesture being the series' final moment?
