The seventh inning of Wednesday night’s game between the Blue Jays and Rangers at Rogers Centre is being called one of the best — and craziest — innings in baseball history. Not only did it have the bizarre run that scored when Jays catcher Russell Martin’s throw back to the pitcher ricocheted off Shin-Soo Choo’s bat while he stood in the batter’s box, but it also had a go-ahead home run by Jose Bautista that included what is perhaps the greatest bat-flip of all-time.
Both those incidents were fun to watch for casual baseball fans. However, not everything that occurred within that inning was all sunshine and roses. After the Rangers’ run that scored on the ricocheted ball back to the pitcher, fans at Rogers Centre were not pleased with the ruling and began throwing debris onto the field. Apparently, one fan threw a can of beer, the contents of which managed to spray a baby that was nearby.
Toronto police say a man has been charged with mischief after a baby was hit by the spray of a thrown beer can at Wednesday’s Blue Jays game.
Const. Victor Kwong says Albert Grummitt was arrested Wednesday night and has since been released.
Police say the baby was with her mother in the front row of the Rogers Centre when the can was tossed their way.
Cameras captured the ugly scene as it was happening, and the teary mom could be seen holding her baby shortly after they were sprayed. Blue Jays players even left the dugout momentarily, pleading with fans to stop throwing debris on the field.
Thankfully, the baby is reported to be okay following the incident and suffered no injuries.
Toronto won the game 6-3 to advance to the American League Championship Series, where they will face the Royals beginning on Friday night in Kansas City.
