Valentina Shevchenko is scheduled to fight former UFC bantamweight champion, Holly Holm, headlining UFC on FOX 20 in Chicago. But her training had a major disruption when her coach Pavel Fedotov pulled a gun on robbers in Peru, killing one of the suspects and getting shot himself. What was a normal day in Peru, where Shevchenko and Fedotov have lived for years, turned deadly as armed robbers allegedly burst into a chicken restaurant where the two were dining. According to MMA Fighting, the infiltrators allegedly split open the heads of three diners who resisted.
The robbers then took the rough U.S. equivalent of $1,400 and attempted to flee, before Shevchenko’s trainer pulled out his own gun and opened fire. Witnesses said nearly 15 rounds were exchanged and Fedotov was left on the ground with a bullet in his abdomen.
You can see Valentina Shevchenko rush to the aid of her long-time trainer in the raw video, which you can watch here.
Two other customers were reportedly injured in the shootout, but both are recovering. While this is no time to think about business at hand, at 11-2, Shevchenko, an international Muay Thai champion, was slated to be an interesting opponent for the striker, Holly Holm. Hopefully, that fight still takes place on July 23, but if it doesn’t, there’s a good reason.
