Could Apple’s latest operating system, iOS 8, be so secure and well encrypted that it’s perfect for pedophiles? That’s what John J. Escalante, chief of detectives for Chicago’s police department, is claiming.
“Apple will become the phone of choice for the pedophile. The average pedophile at this point is probably thinking, I’ve got to get an Apple phone.”
The director of the FBI, James Comey, previously offered up similar sentiments regarding Apple and other companies whose devices seemingly can’t be “cracked” even with a warrant.
“What concerns me about this is companies marketing something expressly to allow people to place themselves beyond the law.”
According to Yahoo, the main issue in iOS 8 is that iMessages are encrypted on the iPhone. If they’re not kept in the unencrypted iCloud, this means that the only way to access them would be through a user’s passcode, which criminals are unlikely to divulge.
