We don’t know much about Ghost Rider’s Nic-Cage free return to the Marvel Universe, aside from the fact it’ll be the Robbie Reyes version of the character driving his Dodge Charger. But, if this promo is any indication, Robbie’s gotten a little more hardcore in his jump to the MCU.
Robbie himself doesn’t turn up, just his car bashing through other cars and, at the end of the spot, seemingly crushing a random criminal between a wall and a bumper. While Ghost Rider is hardly a squeaky clean hero, Marvel had stepped away from the early ’90s grimdark anti-hero thing with Robbie, so it’s curious to see it back. Also we have Fitz looking pensive in a kitchen, although to be fair, Fitz looks pensive pretty much anywhere. The guy’s mind would be on his problems if he were at a puppy ranch.
The shift to mysticism and horror will be a change-up as well. Agents of SHIELD is moving to Tuesdays at 10 p.m. for its fourth season, a slot where ABC can’t seem to make a show stick for more than a year. It was claimed this would let the show get darker, although how you get darker than your main character deliberately murdering somebody by crushing their rib cage is an open question, and clearly they’re following up on that. We’ll see how far September 20.
