Pokémon Red and Blue (#TeamBlue) were released in Japan 20 years ago. To celebrate, the Pokémon Company shelled out at least $5 million for a shiny commercial to air during Super Bowl Blue (Panthers) and Orange (Broncos).
As is now customary, the ad has already been released online, and it’s bringing back strong, fuzzy feelings of staring at my Game Boy for hours at a time (fuzzy, because I lost my vision somewhere in Saffron City).
According to a press release:
The Pokémon Company International today unveiled a new TV commercial that will air during Super Bowl 50 on Sunday, Feb. 7. The ad, shot in Rio de Janeiro, explores ambition, drive, and training, concepts that every Pokémon Trainer is familiar with. It celebrates the millions of Pokémon fans around the world who will enjoy identifying all of the hidden Pokémon references in the ad. It ends with a call to action for all those who strive to achieve their dreams: Train On. A 30-second version of the ad will be aired at the beginning of the third quarter of Super Bowl 50.
February is a good month for Pokémon fans, because on the 27th, Red, Blue, and Yellow will become available for the Nintendo 3DS console. It’s time to re-learn the lyrics to the “Pokérap.” J/K, you never forgot them.
