One of the most puzzling things to come out in the aftermath of the success of Making a Murderer is Steven Avery’s ex-girlfriend Jodi Stachowski basically recanting on everything she said on camera during the filming of the documentary. Stachowski had maintained Avery’s innocence in the documentary footage, even going so far as to claim that she was on the phone with Avery (in prison where she was serving time for a DUI) and that he sounded normal at the time that the murder took place.
However, just last week, Stachowski appeared on Nancy Grace, where she painted a stark contrast to those previous interviews, calling Avery a “monster” who frequently physically assaulted her, and that she had only lied out of fear for her own safety.
Now an investigative reporter for Milwaukee’s WISN 12 News, Colleen Henry says that she’s received a new letter from Avery in response to an interview request. In the three-page missive, Avery maintains his innocence and suggests that Stachowski may have been paid off to change her story.
Avery suggested the state paid his former girlfriend to change her story writing, “How much money Jodi get to talk bad!”
With Avery’s handwritten note came a typed statement in which he wrote, “The real killer is still out there. Who is he stalking now? I am really innocent of this case and that is the truth!!! The truth will set me free!!!!!!!”
Unfortunately, Avery was not able to honor WISN’s request for an interview, due to the policy of the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. It doesn’t sound like this case is going to become any less convoluted anytime soon.
