AMC has hit a bit of a creative rough patch recently. Between Breaking Bad and Mad Men wrapping up and many of its new shows faltering (I see you, Low Winter Sun), the network runs the risk of falling into a “zombies and spinoffs, some of which are also about zombies” rut. This is not all bad news, as this particular rut is currently lined with $100 bills, but it’s not a great long term plan for success. They’re gonna need to launch a new hit show at some point. Preferably soon.
Enter Turn, AMC’s new Revolutionary War spy drama. From THR:
Turn, based on Alexander Rose’s book Washington’s Spies, comes from Nikita’s Craig Silverstein and is executive produced by Barry Josephson. Set during the summer of 1778, the drama centers on a New York farmer named Abe Woodhull, who bands together with a group of childhood friends to form the Culper Ring, a group of spies who turn the tide in America’s fight for independence.
The first promo trailer aired during last night’s episode of The Walking Dead. Like all promo/teaser trailers, it doesn’t really tell us much. It’s basically just 30 vague seconds of musket shots and disconnected dialogue. If I had to guess, I’d say it looks kind of like The Patriot crossed with The Americans, which is a fun visual to run in your head because at some point you’ll picture Mel Gibson chasing Keri Russell with a hatchet and you won’t know if you’re still dreaming up a fictional crossover or if you’ve started seeing visions of actual future crimes like the precogs in Minority Report. LOOK OUT, KERI RUSSELL. IF YOU’RE READING THIS, SEEK SHELTER IMMEDIATELY. THERE’S NO TIME TO WAIT. MEL COULD BE ON HIS WAY RIGHT NOW. CALL THE POLICE AND HIDE IN YOUR BASEMENT UNTIL THEY GET THERE.
