It’s always interesting to see what happens when artists take on a big, long-term activity like a series of movie marathons. On October 21, Greg O’Regan decided to undergo one of these behemoths, watching 365 movies in 365 days. But that’s not all O’Regan is doing — he’s drawing an accompanying sketch for every movie starting with the first movie he watched: Back to the Future. We’ve embedded that one above, and he’s about a month into his movie/sketch challenge.
What’s pretty great about this marathon is that O’Regan is definitely not limiting himself to any genre of movie. As Consequence of Sound points out, choices so far have ranged from very mainstream to very cult. So for every Hunger Games: The Mockingjay Part 1, there’s a Return to Oz and a They Live.
Here’s Hunger Games, from Day 19:
And here’s They Live, from Day 29:
O’Regan also watched the whole Cornetto trilogy — Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End — on Days 13 to 15:
But he’s not above Oscar-winning musicals, either. Here’s Les Miserables from Day 5:
Not many Instagram accounts are worth following, but it’s going to be really cool to see what O’Regan digs up to watch and what he decides to draw for the next 11 months or so. You should definitely follow his account: @greg_or_egan.
